Simple Channel Assignment Strategies for Multiple Channel Ad Hoc Networks

Previous studies by the author examined the feasibility of applying channel changing strategies in ad hoc networks, with varying degrees of mobility, as a means to improve total system throughput and individual flow throughput, as well as to reduce network congestion. These studies presented several heuristic methods that allowed a greatly improved performance to be delivered per network flow. This paper expands on that previous work by considering a static initial channel assignment to an ad hoc network. The effects of this initial assignment on the total and per-node throughput are examined for both non-mobile and mobile ad hoc networks. It is shown that performance is improved and in some cases, using a very simple channel assignment strategy can achieve a super-linear performance improvement in a wireless ad hoc network. 1
